GRADING POLICIES
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS - UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT
Evaluation has been defined as a continuos process of determining or judging the value or amount of something by careful appraisal. Through the guidelines which follow, this appraisal process will include,  the student's success in meeting or exceeding the goals as prescribed by industry, the State of Ohio and in conjunction with the standards as defined by the Cleveland Heights Board of Education.

Where applicable, student assessment will be a mutual, cooperative procedure which involves the instructor, the local school board and its representatives and the State Board of Education.

Student evaluation shall be based on, but not limited to, the following:

 1. Identifiable competencies from the course of study which the individual
     student must master to successfully complete this program of studies.

 2. For each competency, criteria defining student success has been developed.
     Examples of the criteria on which student success will be based, but not
     limited to, are related class test item scores,  progress chart.

 3. Instruments will be selected or designed to evaluate student progress in
     towards successful achievement of program goals, competencies, and
     competency builders (e.g. classroom tests, oral participation, satisfactory
     completion of homework, map, vocabulary, & other assignments as
     applicable, antidotal records, etc.)

 4. Evaluation policies, activities and calendars will be constructed with the
      input department liaison

Whether program objectives and goals have been reached will be ascertained through comparisons of the student's abilities, student competency mastery, the amount and quality of perceived effort the student has exhibited.  Among the factors used to assess student attainment of program goals and objectives will be the student's successful performance and attendance.

Using the preceding as a guide, the following will be the actual grading breakdown.

GRADING SCALE PERCENTAGES

A = 100  - 90
B = 89.9 - 80
C = 79.9 - 70
D = 69.9 - 60
F = 59.9  - 0

The following factors will be used to determine the actual grade percentages. Each entry is very important. All grades will be entered a computer in their corresponding categories and be calculated by the computer. If a student does not work up to their ability, has missing or incomplete assignments their grade will not be as positive as it might have been. All assignments are due on their assigned dates. The only exceptions to assignment due dates are outlined in the High School Policy Book.

There are two major areas which will impact each student's grade are the Quarter (2) grade(s) and the semester Final Exam grade. The components of each of these grades are as follows.

The four factors which impacts each student's Grade are:

  • participation,
  • homework, (including, but not limited to: Focus Questions, Vocabulary, Maps, Study Sheets)
  • notebooks, and
  • test and quizzes.
  • Participation includes the proper classroom behavior and positive interaction during the class, both with the instructor and others in the class. Participation also includes the student's attendance and tardiness in this class.

    Homework includes all written and oral assignments assigned (e.g. including, but not limited to: Focus Questions, Vocabulary, Maps, Study Sheets). The completion of these assignments (as per teacher instruction) may be either partially or totally outside of class.

    Each student is expected to keep an organized notebook (3-ring binder) as described by the instructor. The contents of the notebook will include all written assignments, all handouts distributed in class, and all materials as instructed by the teacher.

    Grades will be recorded in a timely manner.

    The grading scale has been designed to accurately reflect the student's academic work ethic and abilities. This scale will further help the student achieve his fullest potential
